Convert JPG to PNG

Turn JPG into PNG for tools, templates, or forms that only accept PNG — and for lossless re-saves while you keep editing. Everything happens in your browser, nothing gets uploaded.

Why convert JPG to PNG

PNG isn't usually smaller than JPG — quite the opposite. The real reason to convert is compatibility: some design tools, templates, and online forms only accept PNG files, and reject JPG outright regardless of quality or size.

There's also an editing angle: PNG is lossless, so if you're going to open, edit, and re-save an image several times, starting from PNG avoids the fresh compression artifacts that JPG adds on every re-save. Converting once to PNG before a round of edits keeps later saves clean.

What to expect from the file size

For photos, the resulting PNG is often noticeably bigger than the original JPG — that's normal, not a bug, since PNG doesn't discard data the way JPG's lossy compression does. For screenshots or flat-color graphics, the gap is usually much smaller, sometimes barely noticeable.

If your real goal is a smaller file rather than PNG specifically, this isn't the right tool — use the compressor with WebP or JPG output instead, which will get you a lighter file than any PNG conversion.

Transparency: what JPG can't give you

JPG has no alpha channel, so however you convert it, the resulting PNG will be fully opaque — converting doesn't add transparency that wasn't there. If what you actually want is a cutout with a transparent background, use the remove-background tool instead; it works directly from JPG and produces a real transparent PNG.

In short: convert to PNG for compatibility or lossless editing, use remove-background for transparency, and use the compressor if size is what matters.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting from JPG to PNG improve photo quality?

No. PNG can't recover detail that JPG's compression already discarded. What it does is stop further loss — later re-saves of the PNG won't add new artifacts.

Why is the PNG bigger than the original JPG?

PNG is lossless while JPG uses optimized lossy compression built to be small. A bigger PNG after conversion is expected, not a sign of a problem.

Does the resulting PNG have transparency?

No. JPG has no alpha channel, so the PNG comes out fully opaque. Use the remove-background tool if you need a transparent cutout.

Can I convert multiple JPGs at once?

Yes, add a batch and download everything as a ZIP with "Download all."
