How AI background removal works

An AI model, trained to tell a photo's main subject apart from everything else, analyzes your image and produces a cutout with real transparency where the background used to be — no manual tracing required.

The model downloads once (about 30 MB) and stays cached in your browser; after that, processing happens entirely on your own device, without uploading the original photo anywhere. It works the same whether you start from a JPG, PNG, WebP, or even an iPhone HEIC photo — that gets decoded automatically first.

Why the result is always PNG

PNG is the only format here built to keep perfect, lossless transparency — that's why it's this tool's default output. If you need the cutout in WebP instead (which also supports transparency, and usually weighs less), you can switch the output format manually after processing.

If the final destination doesn't support transparency at all — a document, a print job — you can fill the gap with a solid color (white, black, or any brand color) right in the converter, instead of downloading the transparent PNG and editing it elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work with any kind of photo?

It works best with good contrast between the subject and the background, and a subject that's in focus — portraits, products, and objects with a clear shape are the ideal case.

Why is the result PNG and not JPG?

JPG doesn't support transparency. If you need the cutout with a transparent background, PNG (or WebP) is the only real option.

Does my photo get uploaded anywhere?

No. The AI model runs in your browser — the image never leaves your device.

Can I remove the background from several photos at once?

Yes, add a batch and download everything as a ZIP with "Download all."

Can I use a solid color instead of transparency?

Yes. After removing the background, under "Transparency and size" you can fill it with white, black, or any color — handy for ID photos, product listings, or any format that doesn't support transparency.

Does it work on logos, or only photos of people and objects?

It's trained to recognize photographic subjects (people, animals, products), not vector graphics. For a logo with simple shapes and flat colors, manual cutout tools or the original PNG file usually give a better result.

How long does it take to process an image?

The first time, a few extra seconds while the AI model downloads (~30 MB). After that, with the model cached, each image only takes a couple of seconds to process.
