Why your iPhone saves photos that won't open just anywhere

Since iOS 11, the iPhone saves photos as HEIC by default — a more efficient format than JPG that takes up less space at similar quality. The catch is compatibility: many apps, most websites, and a lot of Windows PCs can't open a HEIC file directly, so the photo shows up as a broken icon or a file that "can't be opened."

SMALLIMG decodes the HEIC file right in your browser — not on a server — and converts it into a regular JPG that any program understands. It takes a few seconds, and the original file never leaves your device.

How to convert a HEIC to JPG, step by step

1) Drag the HEIC photo (or several) into the converter. 2) Wait a few seconds while it decodes — you'll see a "Converting HEIC…" message. 3) Adjust the quality if you want to reduce the file size. 4) Download the resulting JPG.

If the file came from AirDrop or sharing straight from the iPhone, it sometimes arrives with no extension or an empty file type — that's fine, SMALLIMG still detects it by the file name.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my iPhone save photos as HEIC?

It's the default format since iOS 11: it takes up less space than JPG at similar quality. You can change it in Settings → Camera → Formats, but converting to JPG whenever you need it is more flexible.

Do I lose quality converting HEIC to JPG?

There's a small loss when re-encoding — unavoidable between two lossy formats — but at high quality (88–95) it's practically unnoticeable.

Does it work with Live Photos?

It uses the still frame — the video part of a Live Photo isn't converted, only the photo.

Do my photos get uploaded anywhere?

No. Decoding and conversion happen entirely in your browser.
